If you haven’t checked out Zar Zor yet, you’re missing out on some seriously great Middle Eastern cuisine. Quietly situated in a residential area, the restaurant offers rich Mesopotamian flavours to surprise and delight your taste buds. Reasonably priced, with a great diversity of dishes to savour for breakfast, dinner, and lunch, Zar Zor might just be your new go-to spot for Edmonton food with friends or a family meal.
Known as the “cradle of civilisation”, Mesopotamia is the birthplace of many aspects of modern culture. It’s also known for its incredibly unique flavours. Zar Zor showcases this rich history in both its food and its presentation. The website describes it as a “traditional taste of Mesopotamia with a modern twist,” and it certainly lives up to this title. When you enter, you’ll be greeted by a brand-new interior with simple and elegant Middle Eastern ambience, perfect for enjoying a sit-down meal. Your second greeting comes in the form of complementary Iraqi bread. Flame broiled in-house, it has a slightly chewy texture, perfect for sharing.
If the bread doesn’t make your mouth water right away, pair it with a serving of hummus or creamy baba ganoush to start your meal. You’ll be led into the entrees with a variety of options, including falafel, kebabs, and shawarma for dinner, and some unique breakfast platters that will change your definition of breakfast forever. The food is anything but plain; every dish features its own distinctively rich spice blend. If you love fish, try the Samak Masgouf, a perfectly charbroiled whole fish served with bread, tomato, onions, and lemon for a simple, but decadent finish. Or, settle in with the Mix Mashawi for a little more variety, with kafta, beef, and chicken skewers. They also offer family platters, although you might not want to share Edmonton food.
There’s no doubt that you’ll leave Zar Zor satisfied, and craving more. Don’t rush out after your meal, though! Reviewers are raving about the coffee and tea, flavoured with aromatic cardamom. Pair it with some sweet baklava for a perfect finish.
