The JW Marriott Is The Tallest Tower In YEG…For Now

JW Marriott Edmonton Ice District & Residences

The JW Marriott, currently under construction, just hit a milestone of 150.535 metres. What’s so special about an in-progress hotel reaching 150 metres? Well, for starters, this is the first on in a list of upcoming downtown revitalization projects to surpass the Epcor Tower, formerly the tallest building in Edmonton at 149.35 metres. Isn’t it cool to see the city grow right in front of your very eyes?

The hotel is expected to open in 2019, finishing at a total height of 192.15 metres. It’s fitting, considering the Epcor Tower was one of the first new high-rises the city has seen in recent years, surpassing Manulife Place in 2011. Six years of being Edmonton’s tallest tower is quite an achievement, but we’re ready to reach to even greater heights.

The JW Marriott will have to cherish its time spent at the top, because it’s a lead unlikely to last. The Stantec Tower, expected to open in 2019, will be a whopping 250.8 metres! Then the Quarters Hotel and Residences building, which is expected to begin construction in 2018, will eclipse Stantec with a completed height of 285.99 metres. By 2020, there’ll be two more buildings in the Ice District – the Encore and Ice District Tower B buildings– that may not surpass these towers in height, but will certainly be formidable in their own right.

Between this and the hoopla surrounding Rogers Place that has yet to wear off, it’s certainly a reminder that it’s a pretty exciting time to be an Edmontonian right now! Downtown is never going to be the same.
